Grandma’s Sour Cream Cookies

How to Make Old Fashioned Sour Cream Cookies
Family memories often form around the kitchen for us. My husband’s favorite cookies are these sour cream cookies. The memories of his mom making 6 times the recipe at Christmas and his dad dunking them in his coffee when they cookies got hard.
These old fashioned sour cream cookies have a hint of spice to them and are versitle to roll out and make shapes or like grandma’s recipe said, drop them on a cookie sheet and bake.
Using old recipes is always fun. A lot of knowledge in the person making them and not a lot written down because everyone knows how to make them. Here is my take on the truly loved family recipe.
What You’ll Need for Grandma’s Sugar Cookies:
- white sugar
- vegetable shortening
- eggs
- sour cream
- flour
- baking soda
- baking powder
- nutmeg

Why Put Sour Cream in Cookies?
Putting sour cream into cookies helps give the cookies moisture and texture while baking. The sour cream also adds a little tang to the flavor of the cookies. If you don’t have sour cream, you can substitute yogurt (plain or vanilla).
How Much Sour Cream Do I Use for Cookies?
For 1 batch of cookies, we use one cup of sour cream.

What Type of Sour Cream Do I Use?
We use full fat sour cream for our cookies. You can use reduced fat sour cream or replace with vanilla or plain yogurt instead.
Are Sour Cream Cookies Soft or Hard?
This sour cream cookie recipe makes a soft cookie. If you leave them uncovered, they will become hard.

Can I Roll Out the Cookie Dough?
Yes. This recipe can be cut into shapes or you can use as a drop cookie.

Can I Frost the Cookies?
You can definitely frost the cookies if you desire. Mix up a buttercream frosting or use a glaze and drizzle over the cookies (add orange or lemon zest to the glaze). You could do a cinnamon sugar dip for the cookies as well.

Cookie Tips:
- preheat oven to 350F
- line baking sheets with parchment paper (silicone baking mats work too)
- allow the cookies to cool slightly before removing from the cookie sheets
- add a frosting for a sweet decoration (like buttercream frosting or a drizzle frosting)
- store in an airtight container
- roll the cookie dough into a roll and slice cookies for baking
- add them to your list of favorite cookie recipes
