In 2011, with two little kids and a tight budget, I started couponing to stretch every dollar. Over time, I realized saving money at the store was only part of the solution.
Now I teach practical food independence — manageable, layered systems that help families reduce dependence on the grocery store without being overwhelmed.
From our Michigan garden to our expanding farm stand, we’re building a model of what steady, accessible food independence looks like.
And I’m here to help you do the same — starting small.

Our home is a farmette (mini farm) with a garden, 20+ fruit trees (apples, cherries, plums, peaches, pears & apricot), berry bushes (raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries) and honey bees. We try to live off the farm by canning what we grow.
- Home Renovations: We bought our home in 2015. It was built in the late 1870s, that we are always renovating something it seems. You can find tips on how we renovate the house and our suggestions for other DIYers.
- Traveling Tips: We love exploring the Great Lakes region as a family, discovering small towns, local festivals, roadside farm markets, and the kinds of hidden gems that make a place memorable. Michigan will always feel like home, but we’ve wandered from coast to coast in search of good food, simple experiences, and stories worth bringing back to the homestead.
