Easy Caramel Recipe
Homemade Caramel Sauce
Equipment
- sterile wet cloth
Ingredients
- 14 ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
- slow cooker with water in it
Instructions
- The jars and bands, should be sterilized before you start.
- Open a can of sweetened condensed milk and pour it evenly into your clean canning jars.
- Wipe the seal to ensure no milk go on the seal, wipe down the jar if it spilled.
- Seal with a lid and and hand tighten the jars and place them in your slow cooker.
- Fill the slow cooker with water, covering the jar.
- You will want the jars to stay covered with water the entire time they process, so put a good 1+ inches of water above the jars (if possible) and cover.
- Put the slow cooker on low for 8 hours. Once your sweetened condensed milk reaches that pretty caramel color, it's done.
- You don't want the caramel to cook to long or it can burn and taste burnt.
- Remove the jars and place them on a towel on the counter. Allow them too cool. The jars should seal as they cool. You can then store the homemade caramel sauce for a few months before eating.

Can this be water bathed in a canner and if so for how long?
That’s a good idea. It’s not something I’ve done to give you an answer though.
How long is a few months to store this caramel sauce I would like to have it for a long . The store that’s in the cabinet
I have not kept it longer than 2 months. We make it for the season so we aren’t making it many times.
Can you stack two jars on top of each other as long as they stay covered with water?
I would not recommend stacking the jars. The water boils and the jars move around in the slow cooker.
How long have you waited to open a jar?
Once it has cooled and sealed, you can open it.
Thank you for this post. I made some yesterday but have not tastes it yet!!!! Can I store this in the cabinet before opening? What about after opening?
I would store an opened jar in the fridge after opening. The others haven’t been opened and should be fine in a pantry.
You make it look so easy and fun!
It was, really. 🙂
