Have you been to Wayne County Ohio or Wooster Ohio?  Let me start by saying Wooster, is not pronounced like rooster.  There is an entire video going over it on you tube, but let me just say it’s pronounced wuster, like ruster.

You need to add these stops to your must stay, see, and do list. Be sure to bring a cooler just in case you find some treats you need to put on ice for your trip home after your visit.

Where to Stay?

Staying at the St. Paul Hotel in the downtown district of Wooster will put you within walking distance of so many great shops.  The hotel is a boutique hotel, having 14 rooms.  It’s beautiful, relaxing, clean and the staff is friendly. This hotel was beautifully remodeled, keeping the beautiful brick in the rooms (some of them have brick).  The bathroom is amazing with heated floors, 3 options for shower, beautiful tile, tv in the mirror. It’s reasonably priced to stay here so it’s a must stay and it comes with a complimentary continental breakfast.  Visit their website.

Blue Spruce Boutique – located downtown Wooster, the Blue Spruce Boutique has unique gifts from clothing, decor and great gifts to give. I love the succulents, so creative! Visit their website

Friendtique – located downtown Wooster A 10,000 square foot store with a great purpose.  Friendtique  takes donated items from the community and resells them to help the local hospice.  Check out the room dedicated to women’s clothing. There is beautiful furniture, household items.  It’s a must stop (and bring a truck they have some great furniture!). Visit their website.

J. M. Smuckers Company Store and Cafe – located in Orrville, the J.M. Smuckers Company Store and  Cafe is more than just jam and jelly.  Smucker’s owns several different brands including Pillsbury, Martha White, Jiff, Crisco, Meow Mix.  They have their store brand products available for purchase and some really beautiful accessories for your home. Lehman’s – located in Kidron, Lehman’s is a great general store that has just about everything you could ever need.  You will want to plan to spend some time seeing all they have to offer. From seeds to harvesting, they have it.  It’s a perfect shop for the homesteader.  We were told of a family who came in that wanted to grow their own pizza.  It took them 2 years to do it!.  Visit their website.

Motts Oils & More – located in downtown Wooster, is your go to stop for flavored balsamic vinegars and infused olive oils.  There is a great selection, you will want to take more than one home!  You can sample, pick your flavors and have it bottled right there.  How cool is that?  Visit them on Facebook.

Pine Tree Barn and Farms – located in Wooster, the Pine Tree Barn and Farms is a renovated 1868 barn.  It has a delicious restaurant in it (Granary), some awesome furniture, home decor and kids items to purchase.  In the Winter, (starting around Thanksgiving time) you can go there and pick your own Christmas tree.  There is a free wagon ride you can take to get your tree. Shisler’s Cheese House – located in Orrville, Shisler’s Cheese House has been in the community since 1958.  Rita is proud to be the 3rd generation running her families business with her son (4th generation).  Their Swiss cheese is a must get on your stop. They ship all over the world too, so it’s convenient to shop. Visit their website.

The Ohio Light Opera – located on the campus of Wooster College in Wooster, the Ohio Light Opera (OLO).  The Freelander Theater puts on some amazing shows. Multiple shows play during the week during their Summer season. Plan to order your tickets and catch a few shows.  Reserve your seats early, there are 13 rows and 1 price regardless of where you sit.  This is a great family experience.  Visit their website.

The Urban Cottage – located in downtown Wooster, The Urban Cottage is one of my favorite shops to visit.  Lots of re-purposed pieces, vintage finds & industrial design pieces.  They have consignment items there, so you will find some unique items as well. Their style fits perfectly for me and my farmhouse decor.  I really loved the picture of the goat! Visit their Facebook page.

The Wooster Book Company – located in downtown Wooster, The Wooster Book Company is Ohio’s largest independent book store.  They have some beautiful books on Ohio and the Amish life. They even have a wine bar! Visit their website.

What To Eat

Basil – located in downtown Wooster, Basil is a sushi and Pan-Asian cuisine restaurant.  They carry a great selection of Asian food. It’s a fun experience and even this American food gal, enjoyed their food. There is a variety of Asian food from Japanese, Chinese, Thai and more.

Broken Rocks – located in downtown Wooster, Broken Rocks bakes their own artisan bread they serve their sandwiches on.  It has the perfect crunch on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside.  Their food is delicious and the staff are friendly and helpful in providing information on their food. Dutch Kitchen Restaurant, Bakery & Gift Shop, located in Dalton the Dutch Kitchen is a must stop on your drive in Wayne County.  Here you will find authentic Amish cooking. They have huge, delicious fry pies! They bake the breads they sell and have other delightful treats, including amazing apple butter.  There is a restaurant where you can grab a bite to eat (known for their chicken) and they have a gift shop.

The Faithful Little Cupcake – located in downtown Wooster, the Faithful Little Cupcake is nom nom good.  They are booked 2 years out for making wedding cakes.  For every wedding cake that is purchased, they donate a birthday cake to a child that would not have gotten one. The cupcakes are delicious with or without the frosting. Visit their website.

Granary at Pine Tree Barn and Farms – located in Wooster, the Granary is inside the Pine Tree Barn and Farms. They focus on only serving lunch and it’s awesome.  With fresh salads, gourmet entrees and house-made desserts (they make their own cheesecake!).  Try their lemon crumb muffin (they are known in the area for it)  This is a must stop to shop, eat and enjoy the view. Holcombs Classics Gourmet Popcorn and Nuts, located in downtown Wooster, is one of the newest additions to downtown.  They have ice cream, popcorn and did I mention fudge? Be sure to check them out on your trip and ask for a sample.  Visit them on Facebook.

Meatheads Union Butcher Shop – located in downtown Wooster.  When you walk by Meatheads the smell of cooked meat draws you in.  They are a butcher shop, you will need to prepare your food later.  The smell of the smoke sausage will make your mouth water. Visit their website.

Spoon Market & Deli -located in downtown Wooster, Spoon Market & Deli has a great selection of market items, some tasty selections of sweets and a deli.  There is also a bar should you want to sit and relax after exploring downtown Wooster. Visit their site.

Tulipan Hungarian Pastry & Coffee Shop – located in downtown Wooster, Tulipan servers authentic old world pastries, gourmet coffees and teas.  They serve breakfast and lunch offering omelets, crepes, sandwiches.  Enjoy your pastry and coffee in their shop in the morning or take it to go.   1. My grandma used to lived just outside Wooster city limits. All these pictures of places in Wooster sure don’t look like the town I remember. I guess it’s time to travel back to my home state and visit!

  2. Great to see Wooster featured! I second the other commenter on Coccia House–its a local favorite for great Italian food and is consistently rated one of the best pizzas in Ohio. Another favorite is the Des Dutch Essenhaus, just south in Shreve. Its the oldest Amish restaurant in the area and has been operated by the same family for over thirty years–has great homemade food and baked goods!

  3. What a great list of things to do in Wooster. You hit many of our favorite spots! The only thing I would add to the list would be Hartzler’s Ice Cream Shoppe. They have the best ice cream we have ever had! They still sell milk in glass bottles and it is non-homogenized. So good!
