How To Make Monkey Tails: Chocolate Frozen Bananas
Do you every buy a bunch of bananas and not eat them all? When Summer hits, I’m taking a few bananas and freezing them so we can making chocolate frozen bananas or monkey tails as some ice cream shops call them.
The local ice cream shops are charging over $3 PER banana for this. I know they are good, but we can make them for less.
Making Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas
This is a simple recipe that only requires a few ingredients (melted chocolate, frozen banana, chopped nuts, sprinkles). Then you need a few pieces of equipment (popsicle sticks, parchment lined baking sheet and a baking sheet)
How Much Time Does it Take to Make Chocolate Covered Frozen Bananas?
It doesn’t take a lot of time to make this recipe, but there is a freezing period for the bananas (with popsicle sticks in them). You will need to do this earlier in the day or the day before you put the recipe together.
What Kind of Melted Chocolate Is Used to Make Chocolate Dipped Frozen Bananas?
We melted chocolate from milk chocolate, chocolate chips. You can use dark chocolate chips, semi sweet, a variety of both. We microwaved the chocolate in a tall glass, to be able to cover the banana with chocolate. If your chocolate gets thick, you can add a little coconut oil to thin the chocolate (start with a teaspoon and add more coconut oil if needed)
How Long Do Chocolate Covered Bananas Last?
Some sites suggest that the frozen bananas (with chocolate) last 3 days. If you forget your bananas in your freezer (while freezing them), they start to dry out and shrivel. So don’t forget them or you’ll want to start over.
Can I Store My Chocolate Dipped Frozen Bananas in the Fridge?
When you store the banana covered in chocolate in the fridge, it starts to thaw and become soft. By having the chocolate covered bananas in the fridge, they start to thaw and soften. The frozen chocolate becomes melted chocolate. My recommendation is to keep your frozen bananas frozen by keeping them in the freezer.
How Do I Store Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas in the Freezer?
Use a large freezer bag and place your frozen banana in the bag. Be sure that the popsicle stick is also in the bag and can seal. You can store your frozen treats in the freezer for 2-3 day in advance of enjoying them.
What Size Bananas Do You Use to Make A Frozen Chocolate Banana?
I recommend using smaller size bananas since it’s a treat, not a meal. One banana could be shared with 2 people. They should also be ripe, but not banana bread ripe to make these treats.
Are Chocolate Dipped Bananas Easy to Eat?
We recommend letting the banana sit 5-10 minutes after being in the freezer to thaw slightly as they may be to hard to eat immediately out of the freezer.
You can also apply this same recipe and make a banana slice covered in melted chocolate. For kids you could make this using a banana half. Sprinkle your favorite nuts, sprinkles or toasted coconut flakes.

Equipment
- 4 Wood Popsicle Sticks
Ingredients
- 2 cups chocolate chips
- 4 frozen bananas
- Sprinkles
- 102 cups crushed peanuts
Instructions
- Peel bananas and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- place the popsicle stick in the banana at the end and above 1/2 in.
- Place the bananas and tray in the freezer until frozen.
- In a microwave safe container, microwave chocolates until they are melted.
- Remove the bananas from the freezer.
- Place the banana in the melted chocolate until coated and place on the parchment paper.
- Sprinkle nuts or sprinkles on the chocolate, as much as desired.
- Repeat process on rest of bananas.
- Place bananas in freezer bags and store in freezer until you are ready to serve.
