Homemade Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Do you love mashed potatoes and maybe want to add a little more flavor to them? If you are a lover of garlic, you will want to make these homemade roasted garlic mashed potatoes.
There are many different potatoes you can use to make this recipe. We prefer the russet potatoes, but yukon gold potatoes or red potatoes work too.
How Many Potatoes Do You Need?
We use about 8 large potatoes to make this recipe. This is approximately 2 1/2 pounds, serving about 4 people. If you are making mashed potatoes for a larger group, double the recipe.
How Much Garlic Do You Use in Garlic Mashed Potatoes?
We used 3 cloves of roasted garlic per 8 potatoes. If you love a lot of garlic flavor, you may want to and 1 or 2 more garlic cloves. If you are using fresh garlic cloves, be sure to mince them well.
How Can I Make My Creamy Mashed Potatoes?
Instead of using whole milk, you can use half and half cream or use heavy cream in place of milk. You could also add a cup of sour cream as well. This will give you delicious and buttery creamy mashed potatoes. For a smooth mashed potato consistency, you will want to used a hand mixer to the potatoes. This will remove any lumps.
How Can I Cook Potatoes Quickly?
We used the Instant Pot to cook our potatoes evenly and quickly. We then add potatoes into the Instant Pot was set to steam for 10 minutes and then a quick release (we added a cup of water in as well). Be sure to use your mesh strainer basket to allow easy removal of the potatoes.

- 8 large 8 large russet potatoes
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk, heavy cream or half-n-half
- 3 cloves soft roasted garlic
- 1 cup water
- 1 stick butter
- pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Peel and dice the potatoes, making sure they are all relatively the same size, so that they cook evenly.
- Put the strainer basket inside the Instant Pot.
- Place the chopped potatoes into the Instant Pot with 1 cup water and salt.
- Add the top onto Instant Pot and place it on Steam for 10 minutes.
- Use the quick release once the pot time has completed and remove the top.
- Remove the potatoes from the pot and place into a bowl or Dutch oven.
- Add your milk (half & half or heavy cream) along with garlic, butter, pepper.
- Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until they are creamy. They may have a few lumps, this is ok, they are homemade after all.
- Taste to ensure the potatoes have the garlic taste you are looking for, add more garlic if desired.
