My son wanted to be a Petoskey Stone for Halloween.  These are not sold in the store.  It has to be made.  This required a lot of thinking on how to do it and this is what I came up with. If you ever need a Petoskey Stone Halloween costume, you can consider this an option.

This costume requires some time, as there is a lot of painting.  You do not have to be good at painting.  Petoskey stones are all different.  Looking at the costume up close, it looks like a big mess.  Standing back looking at it, you can see what it is (once someone tells you too)

This is not the first unique costume he’s challenged me with.  I’ve also made him a carwash costume (a brush using strips of felt glued to a shirt) and a Minecraft spider.

What you’ll need:
gray king or queen size pillow case (smaller if you have a younger kid)
acrylic paint (white, gray and black…or make your own gray with the white and black)
wide and fine paint brushes (for painting on a canvas, not painting a wall)
piece of cardboard (to go into the pillow case)
scissors
sewing machine with gray thread

creating the Petoskey stone

You will want to start by putting cardboard into the pillow case to separate the  sides.  Get a plate and put the different colors of paint on the it.  You will want to have the darkest color in the middle and then move out to lighter colors. I made squares in a circle/hexagon shape (Petoskey has a hexagon shape).

You will want to repeat this over and over until the one side is painted.  Then you can allow to dry and do the other side.  This took a few hours, with many sessions.

Once it is completed, you can take white paint and draw around making a hexagon shape on the outside to define each’fossil’.   Allow to dry and do the next side.

Once dry, you can make the hole for the head and the arms.  You could do this at the beginning but I chose to do it at the end for ease of not painting around holes.  Sew the edges into the costume with your sewing machine and gray thread.

You will want your child to try on the costume to make sure it fits and that they can get it on and off easily.

This costume was not easy and I do recommend wearing a shirt under it as it can feel a little itchy (so my son said).

Don’t you think it turned out better than Charlie’s Brown’s plain rock costume?
