Marietta, Ohio: Where River Views and Small-Town Life Meet
Visit Marietta Ohio
I had the chance to explore some beautiful spots around Washington County, Ohio thanks to the Marietta-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau — and I’m so glad I did.
If you’ve never been to Marietta, it’s tucked right along the eastern edge of Ohio, just before you cross the bridge into West Virginia. It’s one of those historic river towns sitting quietly along the Ohio River, full of charm and stories.
What really stood out to me wasn’t just the views or the history — it was the feeling.
Marietta has seen its share of flooding over the years, but the people here are resilient. When the river rises, the community rises with it. Local businesses show up for each other. Neighbors help neighbors.
It’s the kind of place where people genuinely care — and you can feel that the moment you arrive.
If you’re craving a slower pace, a weekend to unplug, or just a peaceful place to breathe a little deeper, this little river town might be exactly what you need.

Where to Stay in Marietta
Right along the banks of the Ohio River sits the historic Lafayette Hotel — a place that feels like stepping into another era.
Before the Lafayette, the Bellevue Hotel stood here in 1892. After it was destroyed by fire in 1916, the Lafayette was built in its place, reopening in 1918 — this time as a six-story hotel instead of four. You can still feel that history when you walk through the doors.
Inside, the riverboat charm is everywhere. The lobby and lower level carry a classic river theme, and if you look up, you’ll see one of the largest ship stern wheels mounted right on the ceiling. It’s such a unique detail and easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.
Be sure to stop into the Gun Room Restaurant while you’re there. Not only is the food delicious, but you’ll also find photos from the old fire and memorabilia from the original hotel — little pieces of history that tell the story of this place.
One of my favorite parts? You can sit in the lobby and look out over the Ohio River. It’s peaceful, especially in the early morning or just before sunset.
There is an elevator, but some rooms require navigating a few stairs, so if you have mobility restrictions, it’s a good idea to mention that when booking.
It’s the kind of stay that feels both relaxing and rooted in history — perfect if you love places with a story.
My room was on the third floor with a queen bed with view of the river. There was a desk and chair with another winged back chair and television. Air conditioning was provided by a window unit. The bathroom utilized a small space efficiently and contained a shower that provided lots of hot water.
