My husband and son love sausage gravy over buttermilk biscuits.  It’s something they order at restaurants and have bought the frozen stuff at the store too, which can get pricy.  So making our own biscuits and creamy gravy recipe was on our list to save money.

This recipe allowed us to make about 4 servings of sausage gravy for the price of what we paid for 1 premade serving from the store. And homemade buttermilk biscuits, say no more.

You can add more pepper if you like it more spicy.  We used original sausage, but again if you like things hot, pick the sausage that your family loves.

What Kind of Sausage Do You Use To Make Gravy?

We use mild breakfast sausage.  If you like your food spicy, you can use a spicy sausage.  If you are in the middle you can use pepper to season to add a little spice.  Turkey sausage can be used as well, you may need to add addition pepper for seasoning.

Why is My Sausage Gravy Bland?

You may need more pepper.  It could also mean your sausage doesn’t have enough spice to your liking. There are two popular kinds of sausage: mild sausage and spicy sausage (sometimes called hot sausage).  Do not remove the fat from cooking your sausage, that adds flavor too. It is also important to cook the flour for at least a minute (it helps thicken the gravy).

Is Gravy Better with Water or Milk?

We make our gravy with half and half as it adds more flavor and has more fat from cream. You can also use whole milk or a mixture of both.

Why is My Gravy So Thick?

It could be that your gravy was cooked too long.  Add more milk or water to the gravy to loosen it.  You may need to do repeat this if you reheat leftovers too.
