Mom’s Homemade Apple Pie Recipe

I’ve made apple pies for years.  To the point where I could make them (and apple crisp) without a recipe card.  This easy apple pie recipe is my favorite and my families favorite kind of pie.

What Kind of Apples for Pie?

You’ll want to be sure to use baking apples, like gala, granny smith, Fuji or your favorite baking apple. You will also need 2 pie crusts, homemade or store bought, doesn’t matter.

What Ingredients Are Needed?

  • baking apples
  • sugar
  • flour
  • nutmet
  • cinnamon
  • milk
  • coarse sugar

How Many Apples Do I Need?

An aluminum pie tin can can use 4-6 apples, and a deep pie pan can use 6-8, depending on how big the apples are. Larger apples, fewer will be needed. The apples will also soften and reduce in size as well, so plan for that.

Should I Peel the Apples?

This is a personal preference. The apples can be peeled or not. Either way, they should be washed apples.

How Thick Should I Cut the Apples?

We cut the apples into inch cubes, or slices an inch thick. Cutting them into similar sizes will help in even baking and softening.

What Are the Best Baking Apples?

We prefer Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith and Honeycrisp. They will break down and soften when baked. You can use one variety of a couple different kinds if you prefer.

Why Is My Apple Pie Runny?

Using a thickener will help keep your pie from being runny. As the pie bakes, the apples release juices, they need something to bind with and make a slurry. We use flour or cornstarch as a thickener in our pies. If you used a thickener and your pie was still runny, you may need to use more.

Another trick we do, is we let the apples sit in the slurry while we prepare the pie crust. This allows the thickener to absorb juices and gives a visual if there is enough. A liquid puddle may indicate you need a little more flour or cornstarch.

How Do I Avoid a Soggy Bottom Crust?

IF you are finding your fruit pies crust are coming out soggy often, you can add bread crumbs at the bottom or use more flour, cornstarch or tapioca. Some people also put a layer of nuts at the bottom as well.
