DIY: Custom Spice Containers with Chalkboard Paint
I get a small commission to help keep this site up and running, when you use the links below. Thank you for shopping from these links
I wanted to have put labels on my spice containers, but the labels I made from the label maker were not pretty.
I saw a friend had taken chalk paint and made her own, and I thought. I can do that.
What you’ll need:
- Containers
- Chalkboard Paint
- Small detail paint brush
- Chalkboard Markers
- Frog Tape
I bought some plain spice containers from Bed Bath and Beyond, baby formula bottles and quart and pint jars as well (depending on how much I have of a spice). I bought some Rustoleum Chalkboard paint and
Tape the container to make a rectangle ‘template’
Paint the exposed area between the tape. I did 3 coats until I couldn’t see through the paint. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly between applications.
I wrote the names of the spices in the containers after putting the spice in, that way I was sure it would fit in the container.
The Chalkboard marker does wash off, so don’t get it wet (there is a permanent version as well, so choose what will work for you.
My spice container is from Bed Bath and Beyond as well.
This project was pretty quick and easy. The hardest part is getting jars for some for some of the spices that I have more than 1/2 cup of as I don’t want to use my canning jars, so I’m using spaghetti jars as I use them up.
I’ve never heard of chalkboard markers! My husband and I have been complaining about what to do with our spice jars since we redid our kitchen and they’re now in a drawer. My MIL just recently gave me some old chalkboard paint, which seems too serendipitous! I’ll have to give this a try!
Have fun Samantha! Chalk board paint has so many possibilities for uses.
oh this is a GREAT idea! I am going to have to try this!!
You don’t have to be perfect with it and I have all different size containers for my spices and it works for me great! I hope you have fun Tat!
