Easy faux paint some texture on your wall
When we built our house, I really wanted to faux paint the basement. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to do, once I figured it out.
I read books on how to do it and I did it wrong (see below). But once I did it right, I found it very easy and beautiful.
You will need to decide what 2 colors you want to to paint the wall. I did a light tan and a darker tan color (I think one was called deer tracks). You can put the light color as the base coat and the dark as the top coat, or vice versa. I preferred the dark color as the base.
What you’ll need:
paint in light color
paint in dark color
roller & brushes
nice thick brush
glaze 1 part glass to 4 parts paint – have the glaze mixed into the top color of paint you want (tell them you are faux painting so they help you).

However big the area is, get enough paint to cover that area entirely with the base color (whether it’s the light or darker color).
faux paint – getting started
Make sure to tape off the area you don’t want paint on (like the ceiling). You will want to paint the base coat in your room or wall using a roller, trimming it in, like you normally paint. Allow to dry completely.
For the top coat, the glaze should be added in already. Best to have this done at the store. Stir to ensure it’s mixed well.
You will want to used your big bristle brush and dip just the bottom in the paint. Dip the brush onto the newspaper to remove the excess. It’s almost like dry brushing. Just the very tip of the paint brush gets paint on it.
You will want to paint in X’ on the wall. Start in the middle and work your way outwards, up and then down. Make small X’s, large X’s, sizes should vary and go all over.
Keep repeating the X’s over the wall. Step back from the wall and check occasionally to see if you are getting the effect you want. Go back over areas you need want more paint on. You will want to see the base color, but also see the top color also.
Allow the paint to dry and inspect to see if there are areas you want more paint, get out the paint and brush and add more.
If you don’t love it, paint over it and start over.
my mistakes
I talked to someone at the store who told me you paint the wall with glaze. They didn’t tell me to add a color to it. I painted an entire wall with glaze in an X pattern. And it dried the same color it was. So I had to take the glaze BACK to the store, to have color added to it and start all over again. My second attempt, made the beautiful faux paint finish I wanted.
