Have you been to Newport Kentucky?  It is just over the Ohio River from Cincinnati Ohio.  Located along the Ohio river, Newport has some great things worth taking the exit and staying to explore.  Check out what I found to see when you visit Newport Kentucky.

Newport Aquarium  –  Find the aquarium on the banks of the Ohio River.  There is a lot too see and explore at the aquarium.  Sea horses, penguins, sharks, stingrays and more!   There is something for everyone to see and love.  Location: One Aquarium Way, Newport, KY

Newport on the Levee – Find an event going on when you visit.  Lots of great food selects available to feed the foodie in your group.  Enjoy shopping at the stores and their indoor and outdoor kiosks. Location: 1 Levee Way, Newport, KY

Purple People Bridge – The Newport Southbank Bridge is also called the Purple People Bridge.  It is a little over half a mile long and connects Newport Kentucky with Cincinnati Ohio.  This is a pedestrian only bridge making it safe to walk, run or skate across.  And it’s purple! Take the time to take a walk across or stop in the middle and get some great photographs.  Location: 1 Levee Way, Newport, KY

World Peace Bell  -This is the worlds largest free swinging bell.  It stands 12 feet high and  is 12 feet in diameter.  It weighs a whopping  66,000 lbs.  For a nominal fee, you can take tours of the bell (check their site for hours).  You can also view and visit this for free from the sidewalk at no charge like we did.  Location: 425 York Street, Newport KY

Across the River – travel across one of the bridges to Cincinnati and enjoy some of the benefits of both cities attractions and amenities.  Consider staying in Newport as it is less expensive when you travel Cincinnati. I love it when you can save money on vacation, don’t you?

Historical Facts about Newport

  • Settled in 1791 by James Taylor Jr,  who’s father James Taylor Sr purchased the land from George Muse who go it on a land grant
  • Named after Christopher Newport, who commanded the first ship to reach Jamestown Virginia in 1607.
  • Established as a town December 14, 1795

On the other side of the river is Cincinnati where you will find the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.  Travel up I-75 and you’ll find the air & space  museum for Neil Armstrong.
