Of all the pot roasts we make, the German pot roast is by far our family favorite. Find so much flavor packed into this one meal. Using the instant pot allows it to be a one pot meal. The delicious veggies and the spices amp up the flavor of the roast making it tender and you can taste the delicious brown mustard flavors in the delicious marinade the roast is cooked in.

What Is A German Pot Roast?
An authentic German sauerbraten recipe is made with a rump roast. You can also use a chuck roast or pork roast to make pot roast. Traditionally you marinate meat for several days prior to cooking. We season chuck roast and place in a delicious beef stock with German style flavoring.
Can I Use An Instant Pot For A German Pot Roast?
Yes. Cooking time is significantly reduced, and gives you a tender roast meat.
How Do You Sear The Meat?
Use the sauté setting on the pot and olive oil. Place the roast onto the hot pot and season with salt and pepper. While the meat sears, chop your veggies and flip when browned, seasoning the other side. Add the veggies once the meat is seared.
Is This An Authentic German Sauerbraten Recipe?
It is not. Authentic sauerbraten recipe is marinated for several days. Make this recipe without the need for marinating over an extended period
Do You Use Beef Broth Or Beef Stock?
You can use either beef stock or beef broth for this recipe. Use water if you don’t have either.
Can You Make This Roast In A Slow Cooker?
Yes. The German pot roast can definitely be cooked in a crock pot. The roast should be cooked in the slow cooker for 6-8 hours on high. You want the chuck roast to be fork tender before serving.
What Do People Typically Serve With Pot Roast?
Take the cooking juices and turn a delicious gravy. Serve over mashed potatoes and drizzle with the wonderful gravy. And you love egg noodles, you can definitely put them in the gravy and serve the beef on those with the vegetables too.
Can You Freeze Pot Roast?
Prepare the pot roast, place it in a freezer bag, and freeze it until you’re ready to cook. Thaw it before adding it to the slow cooker, and remember to cut the roast in half before freezing
Family Favorite – Instant Pot German Pot Roast
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 2-3 pound boneless beef roast
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 3 large carrots cut into 1/4″ round slices.
- 1 large onion cut into 1 inch chunks
- 2 stalks celery chopped into 1-2 inch pieces
- 1 cup beef broth/stock
- 1/3 cup brown mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 bay leaves
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 2 tablespoons beef broth/stock
Instructions
- Cut the meat in half to ensure cooking meat to tender.
- Sear the meat in the extra virgin olive oil until both sides are browned.
- In a bowl, mix the mustard, broth, pepper, cloves and bay leaves together.
- Add the meat (if not already still in there) and then the veggies into the Instant Pot
- Pour the mustard mix over the meat and veggies and cover.
- Combine the flour and 2 tablespoons of broth. Add into the Instant Pot.
- Cook for 55 minutes on high pressure with natural release.
- Serve with noodles if desired or over mashed potatoes.
