The area around Petoskey Michigan is beautiful. Petoskey and the surrounding area has many family friendly things do that are inexpensive and unique. I’ve put together some of our families favorite things to do near Petoskey that are budget friendly.
Visit Petoskey State Park – relax and enjoy the beach. Rent a kayak. Walk along the beach looking for Petoskey stones.
Visit Zorn Park Beach in downtown Harbor Springs. This is a small, but very cute beach that has sand and is great to take a dip and relax. There is a small area with equipment for kids to play on as well.
Take a chocolate tour – at the Kilwins Chocolate Kitchen on how they have been making their sweet treats since 1947. Tours happen at the Petoskey store during the week Monday thru Friday. Enjoy some chocolate and other sweet confections.
Visit the Oden State Fish Hatchery – In Alanson you’ll find the Oden State Fish Hatchery (no relation to Thor son of Odin). You can stop in and take tours starting at 11am for FREE. Learn about how the fish are raised and then planted (yes planted) into the lakes in Michigan. You can also take a walk through their trails and explore on their own. Take 5 lefts out of the hatchery and you can to to the visitor’s center in Oden off US31. Go to the big fish pond to feed the fish! See Rainbow and Brown Trout here.

Go bowling – In Harbor Springs, you’ll find. Northern Lights Recreation on M119 near the airport. You can bowl, eat and play laser tag. Great to do on rainy days too.
Tunnel of Trees – Take a drive from Habor Springs north on M119 through the Tunnel of Trees. It’s a great experience with a few shops to see and restaurants once you get to Cross Village at the end.
Have a picnic – grab some food and take the family to many of the parks downtown Harbor Springs, the airport observatory, Petoskey State Park and downtown Harbor Springs across from the Zoll Street Beach is an area you can picnic. Bayfront park in downtown Petoskey takes you to the shore where you can see boats, the lighthouse and a little play area for the kids
Watch the airplanes fly in Harbor Springs – On the corner of Pleasantville and M119, there is a small observatory you can park in and watch the planes fly in and out of the Harbor Springs Municipal Airport. There is a small area you can have a picnic or you can also bike ride along the trail there too!

Play Mini Golf! – Pirates Cove! Located in Petoskey on the northern side, before you turn onto M119 to go to Harbor Springs, you can play mini-golf in a pirate themed course.
Take a shoreline cruise in Little Traverse Bay – Harbor Springs. Stafford Pier Restaurant Hosts the Pointer Boat. They take a leisurely cruise for 1 hour 15 minutes in the bay.
Farmers markets – These are great to get your essentials for your snack and something to take home.
Search for Petoskey Stones – Petoskey State Park and Zorn Park are good places to try you luck at finding those gorgeous stones.
