I try to come up with different ways to present food to my kids to eat healthy, but in a fun (sometimes crazy) way. No one looks at a sandwich (at least in my house) and says ohhh make me one. But taking a sandwich and cutting it into weird shapes, poking toothpicks into it, suddenly, it’s fun and delicious and you can’t make enough.
With these ham and cheese and turkey and cheese roll ups it’s easy for your kids to eat and a fun spin on the boring square sandwich.
Everything you need can be found easily at your local Kroger.
Approximate cost for this lunch: $1.83
What you’ll need:
2 slices of wheat bread
1 slice Kroger medium sharp cheddar
1 slice Kroger swiss cheese cut in half
condiments of your choice for the roll up
4 toothpicks
grapes
cantalope cut into chucks
mini cookies
Take the bread and cut the crust off making a square out of the bread.
Add condiments of your choice onto the bread.
Do the same to the ham and turkey (respectfully on their own piece of bread).
Repeat for the cheese as well.
Roll the sandwich and pin with toothpicks to keep closed.
Place a toothpick on either side to keep it closed. (I recommend colored toothpicks as they are easy for kids to see).
Serve with a skewer of grapes and cantaloupe, some mini Keebler stripe cookies and granola bar.
Make sure to remove the pointy part of the skewer (pliers work well for this). You could instead use a container separating the fruit if needed.
The sandwiches are a perfect fit taking to school in the Tupperware Keep Tabs, Snack Cups are great for cookies and fruit.
You will save so much money packing your kids lunch for school. Enjoy making it fun!
Great ideas…. My kids are the same way about sandwiches when I use cookie cutter, or if I stick a tooth pick in something. I love the fruit on a skewer idea — I hadn’t thought of that… my kids will really get a kick out of that.
I was recently thinking about last year, the way lunch ideas started to get boring. THere are a lot of new things, but some of them are overpriced. I love this one. Definitely trade-worthy, lol!
Yummy, I remember that my mom used to use cookie cutters to make me a cool shaped sandwich on the days that I would pack my lunch for school. 🙂
That is so neat! I wish I had thought of stuff like that when my kids were little!
