With the new year, I’m able to look back and reflect what has happened this past year. Mostly by what is still sitting on my desk. I need to file everything away. It’s just sitting there waiting for me to do something with it. Luckily Thirty-One Gifts sent me some of their products to start the year out right. Check out my organization tips for my office. I also give some bonus ideas on how to organize your bathroom too!
Disclosure: Thirty-One Gifts provided these below products to me so I could review and provide my experience. All opinions below are my own and may differ from yours.
organization tips
My office is where everything goes to be given one more pass over before it is saved and filed or tossed. So sadly, when the rest of the house gets clean, my desk gets piled on the papers and other things on it. I feel that I have no system to keep things organized. Until now.
1. Take your papers and items sort them into piles such as
- things to file
- things to review before tossing
- family stuff
- things for taxes
If you use the Your Way Display Bins as sorting bins, you can create a couple areas to file those papers that get tossed everywhere. The bins are 5″W x 12.75″D and 5 inches tall on the front and 7.5 inches tall in the back. And of course they can be personalized. Perfect to have a central place for items as well instead of creeping all over your space.
Once items are groups, you can put them into their permanent place. This bin is also perfect for organizing items (like in your cabinets), as I did in my bathroom cabinet.
2. Have a place to put items
- move like things from Your Way Display bins into file folders and store them in a Your Way Cube or Your Way Rectangle
- use file folders to keep your papers organized
- put items in a permanent location, not moved to another temporary spot
The Your Way Cube and Your Way Rectangles have tops you can order separately. There are clear PVC windows that allow you to see what you have in them. Don’t want to see what’s inside, turn that side to the back. I was able to use the Your Way Cubes to clear clutter I had in my office, organize the pile into papers I wanted to keep for tax purposes.
The Fold N Files are really nice too as they allow me to file things I need at my finger tips. I keep my kids school papers in them and owner manuals for everything that came with one (for easy reference).
3. It’s a marathon, not a sprint
Organizing needs to be something done on a routine basis. It is not something that you do one and you are done. You will need to continue to do it.
- have a routine to organize your items on a weekly, bi-weekly basis
- be consistent
- keep motivated
Keeping up your routine, will keep the clutter from accumulated. I would not organize daily and it may seem overwhelming. Pick a schedule that works best for you.
4. Small portions
It will seem daunting at first to get everything organized. You should organize a little at a time.
- sort for 5 to 10 minute increments so you are not overwhelmed
- clean the smallest room first, you will feel satisfaction quicker than a large room
In using Thirty-One’s organizational bins, I was able to turn my desk space into a pretty organized space. With a little work each week, it will stay this way.
Did you see I had also taken these same Thirty-One bins and organized my bathroom cabinets as well. They are versatile throughout your house. (I had to order more to keep things organized permanently).
