My mom is a beautician. She has been my hair stylist since I was born. She recently retired so I went out and had to find a stylist to do my hair. It has been a a little stressful and was a month long process before I finally made an appointment to go in.
I have had others hair stylists do my hair and I’ve been in hair shows where I’ve let them do whatever they wanted. I have come up with some tips on things to ask your hair stylist when interviewing them and how to find a new one.
finding new hair stylist
Here are my tips on how to find a new stylist for your hair.
- Nice hair – Ask a friend (who’s hair you like) where they get it done. This would be a good lead on a good stylist.
- Ask for recommendations – I would ask people you know (that you like their hair) versus asking people on Facebook on who local does great hair.
- Check online for a Facebook page or website.
- are there pictures of how they do hair?
- do you like a certain stylists hair? (If they have nice hair, as long as they do their own, they should offer good services)
- do they offer the services you need (color, braids, perm, extensions etc)
- Make an appointment with someone and observe:
- how clean is their salon?
- are the staff friendly to you and to each other?
- is the building in a nice location?
- do they ask you enough questions to find out what you need and want done?
- are they accommodating to cutting shorter?
- EXPLAIN what you want and bring a photo of what you are looking for. This is very important to be able to know what you want and explain it well.
- If need more cut off. EXPLAIN what you mean by that. The length, the top, the layers.
- Do you like the color of the hair, would you want it a little dark/lighter.
- Let them know if your hair is currently permed/colored.
things to ask your beautician
- payment – do they only take cash or can you pay by credit card
- tipping – is tipping allowed and how is it done (do you pay the stylist or at the reception). Tipping is 15 to 20% and customary.
- experience – questions to ask – 1. how long have they be doing hair. 2. do they just do cuts or do they do color, up-dos, extensions, perms (whatever services you use)
- cost – what do they charge for services
- appointments – how do they take appointments. Some beauticians take appointments online, calls, messages on Facebook.
What questions did you ask when you were looking for a new beautician or barber?
Thank you for all the tips on how to find a new hair stylist. I moved to a new state, and I really need to find a new place to get my hair done. I think that is a great idea to check online for their websites. It would be nice to see pictures of their place and staff. They might even have portfolios I can look at.
Good look in finding a new stylist. Checking online makes so much sense doesn’t it?
