I saw this idea on Pinterest, but it didn’t have instructions (pet peeve), so I took it on myself to figure this out. Me a novice seamstress. I checked on Pinterest after I was done and discovered people are making these with material.
Material and measuring, not my strong suit to figure this out. So thankful I made these with pillows. As long as you don’t sew the pillow case to far in from the edge, the pillows will fit just fine.
You can make these with 4 -5 pillows, I made mine with 5. These are great to lay on the floor with and if your bed is uncomfortable, you just make it fluffy!
Materials you’ll need (for a 5 pillow bed)
5 standard pillows
5 standard pillow cases (make them match or select different patterns, your choice)
2 1/2 yards sew on Velcro
Matching/complimentary thread
You will want to place 1/2 yard (18 inches) of the velcro inside the edge of the pillow case. I used the edge where it is doubled over as a marker of where to sew it down as a guide. That way the pillow can get in and it will close easily.
The velcro should be somewhat centered so it will close evenly.
Sew down both sides and on the edges of the velcro.
Sew the other piece of the Velcro on the opposite side of the pillow case, sewing on both sides and the edges again.
To sew the edges of the pillow together, place them on top of each other with the pillow case openings on the same edge.
You will want to put all the Velcro on the pillows BEFORE sewing them together, so the material doesn’t bunch up when moving it while sewing.
I sewed about 1/4″ from the edge to sew the pillow cases together on a straight tight stitch. I can barely get the sewing machine to agree with me, so I have no idea what the technical term is.
When all the pillow cases are sewed together, you can then place the pillows into the pillow cases and close them with the velcro.
If you don’t want to, you don’t HAVE to put the Velcro in them (I guess), but what fun would that be if you didn’t!
When it is complete, you can prop one pillow up a bit for ease of sitting up a bit.
Since making this for my son, he has not left it alone.
Getting the kids involved and having them pick out the pillow cases, makes them a part of the process.
This took me about 3 hours to put together, while watching 2 kids, making food, etc.
UPDATE: After having to wash this, I would even recomend just sewing velcro on the pillow cases, making it easier to wash, should you not want to remove the pillows. 5 pillows do not fit into my washer. Just a suggestion and the velcro is very strong so they would not come part without some force.
Happy sewing!
I will have to try this because it doesn’t look very complicated and expensive.
Very easy to make if you have a little time.
Great idea!!! Thanks for sharing 🙂
You are welcome Enjoy this project!
These are fun. I should make me one since I am big kid.
You will love it!
This is an awesome idea. I love to lay on the floor and watch TV, but the carpet just doesn’t cut it! Thanks!!!!!

You are welcome Deborah. Have fun making your own!
WOW! This is really amazing. I never thought about making my own pillows like these. They really turned out good, and they look easy to make. I like the material you used.
Thanks Karen. The hardest part is sewing the velcro on. I can’t imagine having to measure out material to do this. I guess this is the ‘Sandra Lee’ way to make these.
This is a great idea, thank you for sharing.
Have fun if you decide to make your own Christy!
