visit Detroit Michigan
I recently went to Detroit for a #TLEDetroit blogging event sponsored by TravelingMoms and DoubleTree Suites. Detroit is a place you could fill a weekend or even a solid week exploring the city and surrounding areas. I am sharing what you can do in the motor city on a quick day or weekend visit. This is my bucket list of things to do when I visit Detroit Michigan.
things to see
Detroit Institute of Arts – located on Woodward avenue, the museum has over 658,000 square feet, 100 galleries, an auditorium, reference library. Wow, there is a lot to see and explore in this place.
Eat – there are all sorts of restaurants just waiting for you (like Motor City Kitchen in the DoubleTree Suites Hotel). A lot of new restaurants have opened up in Detroit. Check out the eastern market and Greek town for delicious food fare as well.
The Fist – come see a 27 foot bronze fist that weighs 8,000 pounds. The memorial is located in Hart Plaza (5 Woodward Avenue Detroit) in honor of the heavyweight boxer Joe Louis. It will be the most epic fist bump ever!
Fox Theater – catch a great show while in Detroit at the historic Fox Theater. There are great shows and entertainment to be found there.
more to do
Catch a game – with the Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons, Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings, your sports are covered all in one town year round. If there is not a game, visit the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (1 Washington Blvd)
Hitsville USA – Stand where so many Motown artists got their start at Hitsville (2648 W Grand Blvd). Tour the home turned into a recording studio where Motown started and learn of the rich history.
Sleep – Enjoy a good nights rest downtown Detroit. I took a tour recently of the DoubleTree Suites Hotel. With very spacious rooms, comfy beds and windows providing great views of the city, it’s on my list to stay at. You would not know the hotel itself is over 100 years old as they rooms have been recently rennovated. They are using texting to communicate with guests and it’s pretty amazing. Did I mention they have cookies? Residence quarters available as well for those wishing to live downtown. There is also a gym on site (to work off those cookies).
Tours – there are many different tours you can take from bus to boat. See the city and hear this history. This is the perfect way to find out what the city was like, how it is and where it is going. Make sure you bring your camera to capture all the beautiful architecture and attractions.
Wave to the people over in Canada – you know they want to be in Detroit, so wave and invite them on over.
